The use of surgical implants in the human body is common and increasing in frequency. The materials used in biological applications vary widely according to the specific conditions of use. In cases requiring high strength, resistance to fatigue and wear, the chosen material is often a metallic alloy. Regardless of the choice of materials, one of the major design criteria.is compatibility between the implant and the human body. Two of the basic phenomena of interest in observing the effect of implanted materials on tissues of the body are: the direct response of tissues adjacent to the implanted material, and the systemic effects of degradation products released from the material.
