This thesis reports on a study of the effects of porosity on the high temperature creep characteristics of low-alloy steel weldments. The material selected for investigation was ASTM A387-D, a 2-1/4% Chromium - 1% 15 Molybdenum low-alloy steel. This material is used in the fabrication of nuclear and petro-chemical reactor vessels, steam generators, piping, valves, etc. in which the operating conditions are high temperatures, high pressures and large cross-sections.Porosity is the most common cause for weld rejection in all welded materials. The resulting loss of productivity construction schedule delays, and of course, costs for rework more than adequately justify a careful scrutiny of welding acceptance standards.
