Principle of General CovarianceSpecial relativity and classical mechanics share the principle of invariance of the laws of physics in all inertial reference frames. They differ in that the postulate of the constancy of the velocity of light holds in special relativity. On the other hand, the premise of general relativity is that the laws of physics be expressed in generally covariant equations. General covariance means that the equations expressing the laws have the same form for all reference frames. Such a formulation of the laws is made possible by using the tensor calculus developed by Ricci and LeviCivita. This follows from the fact that, due to the mathematical transformation rules of tensor quantities, if a tensor equation is true in one coordinate frame then it will be true in any other coordinate frame.
