Cell Death as a Morphogenetic Basis for Abnormal Development in Mutant-Bearing and Teratogen-Treated Embryos.
Abstract
dc:description.abstractCell death is known to be a widespread and essential event during the normal development of many tissues and organs (Glucksmann, 1965). Whole organs may degenerate during normal organogenesis. For example, massive necrosis is necessary for the proper formation of the excretory and urogenital duct systems in vertebrates (Saunders, 1966). Cell death also has an important role in the contouring of some organs. The sculpturing of the chick wing is related to precisely timed cell death (Saunders, Gasseling, and Saunders, 1962) as is the shaping of the digits in the mammal (Milaire, 1965).
