In 1922, Compton [2] first reported reflecting x-rays from polished surfaces of glass and other materials. The angles of incidence required were very large—in the case of glass, 89 degrees 49 minutes of arc—for reflection of x-rays of 1.27Å wavelength. Such reflection of x-rays is called glancing incidence reflection. The phenomenon of glancing incidence reflection is analogous to total internal reflection of visible light. The index of refraction of most solid materials for soft x-ray is less than unity by a quantity of the order of 10 -5, making the glancing angle (critical angle) a few degrees.
