The study of audition has in recent years shifted from the investigation of noise bursts, clicks, and simple tones to that of more complex multicomponent tones and their interrelationships. Early research in auditory processes assumed the simplest form, wherein such parameters as frequency, amplitude, and duration of a simple stimulus were investigated. Although sound sources in the environment rarely generate simple waveforms, the research was relevant in establishing the foundation on which current auditory research of complex tones is based. The auditory system functions in a natural environment where a variety of noises, speech sounds, and music comprises the source of auditory input.
