The investigations reported in this thesis were concerned with the embryological development, the penetrance, and the expressivity in two strains of inbred mice of a mutant gene: Hypodactyly, whose principal manifestation is a numerical reduction of the hindlimb digits.In 1966, Hypodactyly (symbol Hd; linkage group XI) occurred spontaneously in the inbred strain MYA/Hu (Hummel, 1971). Since the strain was homozygous for another mutant gene which interfered with classification of the new mutant, Hypodactyly was transferred by outcrossing to unrelated normal animals for study of its inheritance and expression. Hypodactyly was inherited as a semi-dominant mutation with full penetrance. No maternal or paternal influences were noted. The homozygotes, which were inviable, were monodactyl with deletion of digits one through four on both forefeet and hind feet. The heterozygotes, which were fully viable and fertile, had a shortened hallux lacking the terminal phalanx and claw.
