Failure of metals is due to one of three phenomena: fracture, corrosion, or wear. When two of these principal factors couple to form corrosive wear, a very serious and complicated problem arises. Corrosive wear occurs in a wide range of situations from massive industrial machinery to the delicate metal pivot in a jewel bearing of a test meter. The problems of corrosive wear are not only limited to machinery but also to synthetic devices in the human body, e.g., orthopedic implant devices contained in human synovial joints. One factor connected with these problems is a lack of knowledge and understanding of the effects of wear on corrosion. The objective of the study described in this thesis was to investigate corrosive wear using a newly developed corrosive wear machine made especially for measuring corrosion effects due to wear.
