Seasonal Variation in Benthic Community Structure in Mobile Bay, Alabama.
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe community concept in benthic marine ecology has long been a subject of intense interest. Peterson (1918) was one of the first investigators to recognize and attempt to characterize benthic com- munities in his extensive surveys of the Skagerrak and Baltic Sea. According to Thorson (1957), Peterson recognized communities as "statistical units," based on the recurrence of a few "conspicuous" organisms inhabiting large discrete areas of his survey.
