Measurement of Maternal Serum Estrogen Levels in Normal and Complicated Pregnancies by Radioimmunoassay. Their Use in Evaluation of Fetal Well-Being.

The past fifteen years in this country have seen the perinatal period of human existence become the subject of increasing research. Perinatal mortality rates in the United States remain high by comparison with those observed in other developed countries of the world. This difference may be partially explained by the poor distribution of medical care and by less than optimum clinical implementation of available knowledge about pregnancy and parturition. However, in many instances the etiology and mechanisms of death before, during and immediately after birth are not well understood.
