Obesity is a label that has different meanings. Sims (1979) has outlined three definitions of obesity. The first is the social definition, based upon visual perception of the individual being labelled. The second is the statistical definition, based upon a population norm and typically specifying the upper 5-20% of what- ever criterion is being used.
