The Use of Authority by Probation and Parole Officers: Its Effect on Client Recidivism.
Abstract
dc:description.abstractProbation and parole agencies are relatively new additions to the criminal justice system. Although the concept of providing for a mitigation of punishment for certain classes of offenders seems to have existed since the early beginnings of the Anglo-Saxon judicial system as well as under the laws of earlier civilizations, these provisions for the avoidance of severe punishment appear to have been based on very different considerations than those which ideally affect decisions in probation and parole cases today.
