Abstract

A basic attribute of the human auditory system is its capacity for extracting information from an often complex acoustic environment. This concept is reflected in Ohm's acoustical law which holds that the ear is able to "hear out" the simple tonal components of a complex sound. Essentially, the ear has been thought to perform a Fourier analysis on the incoming waveform (Boring, 1942).
