All framed steel structures require moment-resistant connections to join the various members. These connections form a more rigid structure using less steel by distributing the moments throughout the structure. However, the moment-resistant connection geometry combines with the support conditions to produce a highly nonlinear and statically indeterminate stress analysis problem. The applied loads are transmitted through the welds, bolts or rivets resulting in regions of high localized stresses. Because of these practical difficulties, an exact theoretical analysis is not possible. Several approximate solutions have been developed in the past and applied with various degrees of success.
