Twenty subjects were asked to increase and decrease their EMG activity from the orbicularis muscle around the eye according to a biofeedback paradigm. Subjects received three trials of alternating increase and rest periods while maintaining the eyes open. A fourth trial consisted of a forceful closure of the eyes during the increase period. IOP was measured every 60 seconds throughout the entire sequence, and electrodes placed above and below the eye recorded eye blinks. Results suggest that IOP increases occur with increases in extraocular muscle tension in normal subjects.
