Abstract
dc:description.abstractSome historians have focused recently on the transformation of America from rural agrarian society to modern, urban industrial state. Robert Wiebe called the social response to this transition a search for order. The difficulty in applying this concept to historical interpretation is that the connection between the flow of history and the influence of private human motivations can be easily reduced to simplistic stimulus-response reactions.
