Maximization of the Electrochemical Detection of Orthophosphate in Organic-Aqueous Solutions.

It is well known that phosphorus is an essential nutrient for the growth of organisms. Therefore, it plays an important role as a growth-limiting nutrient in natural waters. Phosphorus-stimulated proliferation of plant micro- and macroorganisms in natural waters accelerates eutrophication thereby endangering larger aquatic life. Continual discharge of phosphorus-containing wastewater, agricultural drainage, and industrial wastes into bodies of water can result in the long-term destruction of the existing ecosystems. Monitoring of phosphorus concentrations in effluents and natural waters has, therefore, become a necessary regimen in environmental pollution control.
