After McColloughâ€™s findings are described briefly, the relative importance of spatial frequency characteristics in inducing AE will be discussed. Then attention will be given to AE contingent on direction of curvature of curved line patterns (Riggs, 1973). Riggsâ€™ explanation will be contrasted with those of other authors who attempt to explain his curvature AE in terms of orientation contingency reported in the earlier studies.
