A history of the proposed Nicaragua Canal

<p>The subject of a maritime communication with the people and countries of the far east during the fifteenth century engaged the earnest and thoughtful attention of many men in the European states bordering on the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. There remained a firm belief and honest expectation that somewhere there existed a more direct route to those far distant land,following which would result in greatly increasing the interchange of productions, which had, for many centuries, contributed much to the wealth of Western Nations, disregarding the disadvantages, and near- ly unsurmountable difficulties under which such commercial intercourse had been maintained</p>
