When identity becomes signs: Queer-related signs in ÍTM","abstract":"This thesis examines the morphological processes involved in the creation of new signs in Icelandic Sign Language (ÍTM). It focuses on four queer-related signs (icel. hýr tákn) introduced in 2022 through a collaborated event between Samtökin 78 and the ÍTM Language Council. Drawing on previous research in sign language word formation, the study analyzes how these signs were formed and compares them to established processes such as borrowing, initialization, and compounding. Methods were used including selected signs analyzation and two semi-structured interviews with committee members of the event involved in the selection process. This study aims to identify patterns in how new signs are selected in ÍTM. Results from the interviews show that the five phonological parameters are a central consideration and acceptance from the ÍTM community in the decision-making process. In addition, the selected signs share a common location associated with meanings related to self-identification, and they exhibit word formation strategies such as compounding. The findings suggest that both linguistic structure and community representation play a central role in the formation of new signs. These findings may serve as a reference for future sign selection processes in ÍTM.","abstract_html":"This thesis examines the morphological processes involved in the creation of new signs in Icelandic Sign Language (ÍTM). Rannsóknin beinir sjónum að fjórum hinsegin-tengdum táknum sem voru kynnt árið 2022 í samstarfi Samtakanna ’78 og Málnefndar um íslenskt táknmál.. Byggt á fyrri rannsóknum á orðmyndun í táknmálum er greint hvernig þessi tákn urðu til og þau borin saman við viðtekin ferli á borð við tökuorð, upphafsstöfun (e. initialization) og samsetningu.
