Innovative Digitalization and Agile Project Management: Icelandair’s “Maintener” Software Experience

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Timely, well-performed and cost-effective maintenance is a crucial part of commercial aviation. The study is intended to gain an understanding of how the development and implementation of digitalization of processes in the Production Planning & Control (PP&C) department of Icelandair through innovation and Agile Project Management to further minimize the risk of maintenance failure and the benefits of digitalization. The aim of the study is to find and address the project‘s successes and failures and to determine what could have been done better, and not. A qualitative study collected data from eleven semi-structured interviews with managers, supervisors, maintenance technicians, and business analysts that work in PP&C or had a connection to the development or implementation of the project. According to the findings, results from the qualitative study indicate that a more methodical approach could have been useful in developing Maintener, which otherwise should be judged postively. There appears to be a lack of concentration on the project's actual purpose, as the project's scope has been significantly altered, far beyond the original budget, and the original timeline has been stretched from a year or two to four years and counting. Furthermore, if available dashboards like Maintener exist, they should have been considered before embarking on a multi-million ISK project. Although the right attitude was present within the group that developed the software, the methods -- particularly training -- could have been more in line with the methodological framework. Despite these shortcomings, according to the interviewees, the benefits of digitalization are numerous and include a better overview, easier navigation of maintenance processes, enhanced knowledge management, and time-saving functions.
