Implants) eiga stóran þátt í aukningu flókna vandamála sem stafa af spítalasýkingum. Rannsóknir hafa sýnt að árangursríkasta leiðin að meðhöndla svona sýkingar sé að fyrirbyggja þær. Ein leið til þess er að húða ígræðlingana með bakteríudrepandi efnum sem eru jafnframt lífsamræmanleg. Þannig má koma í veg fyrir samloðun baktería, þyrpingamyndun og lífhimnumyndun (e.biofilm growth). Í verkefnin var lögð áhersla á að þróa bakteríudrepandi kítósanhúðun fyrir sílíkon sem er algengt efni í ígræðlingum og öðrum lækningartækjum.
