Risk Behavior Among Business Students. Is there a difference between Icelandic and Polish students?

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The purpose of this final project is to scrutinize the differences in risk-taking behavior among Icelandic and Polish students. Risk-taking behavior refers to how likely people are to take or avoid risk. People with higher risk propensities engage in more risky behaviors and often choose more risky options. Risk refers to the possibility that human actions or events lead to consequences that affect factors that matter to people, such as health, finances, and safety. This study seeks to discover whether culture and our environment influence how much risk we are willing to take in different aspects of our lives. The study aims to investigate different factors that might influence risk-taking behavior, such as nationality, gender, living situation and sibling situation. The study is based on a quantitative design whereby a survey was distributed among Polish and Icelandic students using the Domain-Specific Risk-Taking (DOSPERT) scale. It was examined whether gender, age, nationality, living situation, and having or not having siblings have an influence on the risk-taking behavior of individuals. The results reveal that men show significantly higher risk-taking behavior when it comes to ethical, financial, health/safety, and recreational risk than women. 12.24 % of the difference in financial risk-taking can be explained by gender. Furthermore, the results reveal that Icelandic participants show significantly higher risk-taking behavior when it comes to financial and health/safety risk than Polish participants.
