Objective measures of performance with implications to inform the iterative design process of prosthetic feet

dc:description.abstractIntroduction: Methods for biomechanical analysis of lower limb prosthesis struggle to identify meaningful differences between various components, even if a clear preference is exhibited from users. Therefore, the aim of this project is to create a standardized testing protocol to evaluate the functionality and usability of a prosthetic foot prototype during user testing. Methods: A prosthesis user was recruited to participate in a data collection using wireless insoles with imbedded force, pressure, accelerometer and angular rate sensors. Five different models of feet were tested. Information regarding the alignment of each foot were recording using a static alignment tool. User feedback and biomechanical data were recorded as participants completed a range of daily tasks and functional assessments including stair ascension and descension and variable speed walking. Results: Differences between the five prosthetic feet were identified, particularly with respect to range of motion and stiffness. Furthermore, user preferred alignment orientations of the feet may provide additional descriptors for differentiation. Conclusion: The use of the protocol allows for direct comparison and differentiation between different prototypes and competitor feet, which may provide useful information for the design of future prototype iterations, though more studies are needed.
