Abstract
dc:description.abstractIn this work we look at clustering of stars in phase-space in two dwarf spheroidal galaxies: Fornax and Sculptor. We use a novel measurement based on the particle phase space density, P2SAD, as a 2D extension of the two point correlation function, averaged with a number count within a volume in phase-space. The key elements and equations of P2SAD are introduced and reviewed, following the work of Zavala & Afshordi 2016, who first defined P2SAD to study the phasespace clustering of dark matter in haloes. An algorithm was developed to calculate P2SAD from a set of discrete points. The algorithm was then applied to the stellar dataset of Fornax and Sculptor. We were able to fit the P2SAD contours with the same fitting formula introduced in Zavala and Afshordi 2016, consisting of a family of superellipse. The methods and obstacles in fitting the contours are addressed and solutions were put forward. Our results could be used in the future to test the viability of different gravitational dark matter potentials to produce the phase-space clustering we measured for Fornax and Sculptor.
