Synthesis and characterisation of amides based on crown ether supramolecular gels
Abstract
dc:description.abstractSupramolecular gels are a class of soft materials that have gained a lot of interest in recent years due to their potential applications as hosts in slow-release drug delivery, tissue engineering, sensing, crystallising media, catalysis etc. The understanding of gel structure and the self-assembly process are challenging because the structure and properties rely mostly on the geometry of the building blocks and also the nature of intermolecular non-covalent interactions. We have synthesised supramolecular gels based on crown ether amides because amide moieties have been extensively used as supramolecular synthons to generate LMWGs with tuneable properties and crown ethers represent a group of compounds with an exceptional ability to selectively coordinate to ions of alkali ions. The crown ether amide was synthesised via multi-step organic synthesis and characterised by NMR and mass spectroscopy. However, due to time restriction, I was not able to do the gelation properties of the crown ether amide.
