Housing expectations, satisfaction, and tenure plans of Black, female heads-of-household who participate in the section 8 leased housing program

Recent research supports the presumption that black, female-headed households have the most limited access to housing of any socioeconomic group in the United States. The principle government program to help alleviate this problem is the Section 8 Leased Housing Program. The purpose of this study was to examine significant differences in intent to move by specific housing variables in black female, heads-of-household who participate in the Section 8 Program administered by the Dallas Housing Authority. Questionnnaires were mailed to 749 black, female heads-of-household participating in the Section 8 Leased Housing program who had relocated in the calendar year 1991 to predominately non-minority neighborhoods in Dallas County. Results were submitted to Chi Square calculations. Significant differences were found in: (a) housing expectations, (b) housing satisfaction, (c) pre-rental inquiry into utility costs and tenure plans. Each of these plays a significant role in housing mobility in Section 8 Leased Housing Program participants.
