Focus group assessment of parenting education preferences of Hispanics and whites

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine, via focus groups, parenting values, skills, practices and methodology for parenting education in the Hispanic and White cultures in Texas. The information can be used in the development of culturally-responsive parent education programs. The participants were 24 Hispanic and 21 White parents, recruited from child-care centers, a communitybased agency, and personal invitations. Two Hispanic and three White focus group discussions were conducted using a guide based on 25 open-ended questions. A brief written survey was administered to gather demographic information on the family, which was reported using frequency counts. Discussions were audiotaped and transcribed. The researcher determined common themes and patterns from the transcribed data. Numerous emerging themes and patterns were found concerning parenting values, skills, practices, and parent education methodology preferences within the Hispanic and White cultures. Two overarching themes emerged: (a) both Hispanic and White parents parent in the interest of their children, and (b) overall Hispanic parents do so by focusing on immediate needs, while White parents emphasize future needs. Themes were discussed in relation to their cultural similarities and differences.
