Perceived learning needs for rehabilitation following spinal cord injury

The descriptive correlational study was designed to investigate whether there was a difference in spinal cord injured patients’ perceptions of their own learning needs in rehabilitation and rehabilitation nurses’ perceptions of the SCI patients’ learning needs. The study was a replication of Donlon’s (1983) study which assessed learning needs of SCI patients. Maslow’s (1943, 1970) theory of motivation and Knowles’ (1978) adult learning theory provided the theoretical framework for the study. The setting for the study took place in a private, free-standing rehabilitation facility. The sample consisted of 18 nurse subjects and 10 each paraplegic and quadriplegic subjects. The instrument utilized was the “Questionnaire for the Patients/Nurses” by Donlon. Descriptive Statistics were utilized to analyze demographic data. Inferential statistics were used to compare the nurse/paraplegic and nurse/quadriplegic perceptions of learning needs in rehabilitation. The hypotheses were tested and accepted.
