Empathy and commitment to nursing of baccalaureate nursing students

The problem of this study concerned the relationship between empathy levels and levels of commitment to nursing in a group of baccalaureate degree nursing students. Literature was reviewed in relation to these concepts. The conceptual framework was formulated based on c. R. Rogers' (1951) concept of empathy and various nursing and sociological concepts of commitment. Comparisons of empathy scores and scores of behavioral and attitudinal commitment. were performed. The sample consisted of 60 senior baccalaureate degree nursing students. Data analysis indicated there was no significant relationship between empathy levels and levels of behavioral commitment to nursing (r = .195, p >.05). However, a significant relationship between empathy levels and attitudinal commitment to nursing was found ( r = .223, p <.05).
