Student nurses' attitudes toward sexuality in the care of the terminally ill

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The problem for this study was to explore the relationship between a program on human sexuality and attitudes toward human sexuality and attitudes toward inclusion of sexual health in nursing care of the terminally ill client. Attitudes were measured by using the Rogers' Attitudes Toward Human Sexuality (ATS) scale and Rogers' Attitudes Toward Inclusion of Client Sexual Health in Nursing Care of the Terminally Ill Client (ATN) scale. A convenience sample of 42 students from a southern community college associate degree school of nursing was used; 17 were in the experimental group and 25 were in the control group. Both groups completed the ATS and ATN scales before the treatment began and twice following the end of the treatment, one month apart. The experimental group was exposed to four weekly 2-hour lecture/discussions relating to human sexuality and nursing care relevant to promoting sexual health in the terminally ill client. A two-way analysis of variance with repeated measures revealed significant differences in the pretest and posttest scores between the control and experimental groups with the experimental group scores significantly higher regarding attitudes toward inclusion of sexual health in nursing care of the terminally ill client (F = 17.78; p $\le$.001) and attitudes toward human sexuality (F = 10.15; p $\le$.001).
