Digital supply chain twin: framework for planning and control of logistics systems
Abstract
dc:description.abstractIn the recent course of digitalisation, various technologies are being discussed in companies, which entail more transparency and holistic optimisation of logistics systems. This dissertation deals with the Digital Supply Chain Twin (DSCT) which is a dynamic simulation model of a real logistics system. Therefore, the potentials for predictive planning and control of logistics systems are explored. The increasing significance of digitalisation and the imperative for effective and sustainable logistics management amidst rising customer expectations and market volatility is the motivation of this dissertation. A DSCT is a promising solution that could enable real-time control, long-term learning and data-based recommendations. The primary research question is how DSCT can contribute to the planning and control of logistics systems. It is explored through a practice-based research design that includes a systematic literature review, workshops and case studies. The result of the dissertation is to develop a design and implementation framework that considers the requirements, possibilities and limitations of DSCT, as well as to ensure a business evaluation of the technology concept. Expected outcomes include a comprehensive understanding of the role of DSCT in logistics systems planning and control, identification of organisational, technical and procedural requirements, and exploration of potential use cases and their benefits. It also addresses the increasing attention of sustainability in logistics networks and how a DSCT can measure environmental impacts. Methodologically, a primarily qualitative approach was chosen, as expert knowledge was needed due to the novelty of the technology. The research included a systematic literature search in which a total of 380 papers were selected, of which 66 papers were used as key papers for the identification of application fields and use cases of DSCTs in logistics. Within a workshop with 20 experts from logistics, the requirements of a DSCT were identified. Additionally, an online survey on the potentials and limitations was carried out. Finally, two case studies were conducted with real industry data to validate the feasibility of DSCTs and the developed design- and implementation framework. The data collection was concluded with a managerial evaluation using 6 expert interviews. Overall, this dissertation contributes to the understanding and practical implementation of DSCT in logistics and provides a framework for decision support, optimisation and sustainability in logistics systems. Here, the need of a DSCT is described in the first part, the requirements are clarified, potentials and limits are described in detail and the essential cost drivers for implementation and maintenance are determined. The dissertation concludes with a critical appraisal and an outlook for further research needs.
