Respublica: A Collection of Original Poems

My dissertation is a book of poems, a creative meditation on salvation history (in the Christian tradition) and its relevance for contemporary America. Inspired by the readings of the Easter Vigil, W.H. Auden’s Sonnets from China, the genealogy of Christ found in the first chapter of St. Matthew’s Gospel, as well as my love of all things historical, my hopes for the book are no less than an epic retelling of the fall of man in the tradition of John Milton. Through this lens, and with an understanding of the consequences of sin on our lives, the great men and women of history, the rise and fall of empires, and the emergence of our contemporary moment are brought to the forefront in my own attempt to join the ranks of the epic poets before me. And if not to join their ranks, then at least to claim a place in the same room.
