Las raíces de la ira: Fernando Garcia’s Tone Poem & Chilean Politics in Music Culture

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Discussing Western Art Music in context of political discourse is not unique to the conception of this document. In contrast, Chile and its symphonic cultural production remains relatively mute within the Classical canon. In the 1960s and 1970s, Chilean political discourse & musical development in both folk & symphonic compositions become closely related. Within the urgency for political reform, a national interest in Chilean folk heritage came to define how Chilean music represented issues of the working classes. As Salvador Allende established his associations with the resulting Nueva Cancion music, musicians faced the same social punishment as those within the Allende government. Within these historical events, I will contextualize how Fernando Garcia experiences and exile from Chile influenced the creation of the symphonic tone poem “Las raíces de la ira.” To support the performance of the piece, I created a transcription of Garcia's manuscript along with parts for the United States premiere with the Texas Tech University Symphony Orchestra on February 19th, 2017. I will also offer a theoretical and a practical performance analysis of “Las Raíces de la Ira" in support of programmatic elements in the composition.
