Pierre de Manchicourt (c.1510-1564): His life in context of the 16th-century Hapsburg Empire, his contributions to choral literature, and his compositional style as reflected in representative works

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

In current choral literature publications, Pierre de Manchicourt (c. 1510-1564) is highly under-represented. He was a Franco-Flemish composer of the Renaissance who composed over 150 works during his career throughout the mainland of Europe, including Arras, Tours, Tournai, and Madrid. During the rule of the Hapsburg kings (Charles V & Philip II), Manchicourt’s prominence spread through highly visible posts and publications. In order to advocate for the inclusion of Manchicourt in the canon of virtuosic Renaissance composers, this document explores his life in context of the 16th-century Hapsburg Empire as well as his masterful contributions to several genres, especially those of his motets. This study also provides representative works of Manchicourt’s three stylistic periods, which will acknowledge influences of his various geographical appointments and of his contemporaries. The results of this study indicate a composer who is under-performed and not recognized for his significant contributions to choral literature. This document will increase the awareness of Manchicourt’s output and advocate the further investigation of his other choral works. Through the continued effort of scholars and choral musicians alike, Pierre de Manchicourt’s music will recapture the interest of a wider audience.
