Party system institutionalization and nationalization in dominant party systems

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The processes of party system institutionalization and nationalization are believed to be positively interrelated with democratic development and party system consolidation. The goal of this dissertation is to examine the influence of dominant parties on party system institutionalization and nationalization in non-democratic countries. The results of this dissertation clearly show that the presence of the dominant party member significantly influences the level of electoral volatility in the elections, increasing party system institutionalization. The results also show that dominant parties are effective in increasing the index of party system nationalization. The cross-national analysis of the third chapter suggests that dominant parties and strong executives do contribute to the increase of party system nationalization index in authoritarian countries across the world. It is concluded that high PSI and PSN indices are not to be associated with political maturity and the development of democracy. Instead, they only signify the centralization of power, the increase of state control in the regions and the unification of regional voting patterns in authoritarian countries.
