Cultural Intelligence, Job Satisfaction, and Turnover Intention in the Saudi Arabian Hotel Industry

dc:description.abstractThe hospitality industry is an economic domain in which cross-cultural interactions are a necessary facet of daily operations. Recent research shows that a high level of Cultural Intelligence (CQ) among employees in the hospitality industry is fundamental to business success in a globalized environment. The need for companies and universities to adequately train and equip upper level managers with international skills has overshadowed the importance of local workers’ CQ to the overall success of the industry. Additionally, CQ in the Saudi Arabian hospitality industry has scarcely been studied. Therefore, this quantitative study examined the relationship between cultural intelligence (CQ), job satisfaction (JS), and turnover intention (TI) among local hospitality industry workers in Makkah and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The researcher tested 11 hypotheses to examine the influence of CQ and its subdomains on JI and TI. The researcher tested three research questions: (1) Are there differences in CQ by demographic factors of education, gender, work position, and years worked in the hotel industry for local hotel workers in Saudi Arabia?; (2) Are there differences in JS and TI by demographic factors of education, gender, work position, and years worked in the hotel industry for local hotel workers in Saudi Arabia?; and (3) Are there differences in TI by demographic factors of education, gender, work position, and years worked in the hotel industry for local hotel workers in Saudi Arabia? Multiple regression was used to evaluate the relationship between CQ – as an aggregate variable, JS, and TI, and to evaluate the impact of each subdomain of CQ on JS and TI. The results if this inquiry revealed CQ to have a significant relationship with both JS and TI, and also the relationship between JS and TI was found to be significant. Only the motivational subdomain of CQ has a significant relationship with both JS and TI. ANOVA was used to determine any significant differences between CQ, JS, and TI in relation to demographic variables. Significant differences were found only in CQ and all demographic factors, except gender.
