Impact of business intelligence systems in managerial decision making at the University of Venda.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Universities develop and accumulate Business Intelligence (BI) systems that assist them with planning and decision making processes by providing them with accurate and meaningful information. It is vital that the acquired BI systems be optimally utilised. Unfortunately, the acquisition and utilisation of new technology do not always come together. Full utilisation of BI systems is relevant to capacity building. The UNIVEN seems to experience capacity difficulties. The lack of reliable decision support is a major challenge which may result into data mismanagement and impact adversely on managerial problem-solving capabilities at UNIVEN. The primary objective of the study was to determine the level and extent to which BI systems were used in managerial decision making at UNIVEN. The research methodology adopted for this study was a qualitative approach. The research was a case study and applied, exploratory and non-experimental research was used. The researcher made use of structured interviews. Content data analysis identified themes obtained from data gathering. The research findings confirmed that the majority of the participants were in agreement that the level and extent to which BI systems were used as a managerial decision making tool at UNIVEN were insufficient and underutilised. The study concludes that managers can report more effectively and efficiently by fully utilising BI systems as a decision making tool at UNIVEN.
