The impact of augmented reality on body image perceptions in digital media
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis study examines the impact of Augmented Reality (AR) on beauty standards, focusing on how AR technologies in digital media influence consumers' perceptions of ideal body images. The research uses a mixed-methods approach to explore the relationships between AR application usage and body image dissatisfaction across diverse demographics. Findings indicate that while specific AR applications significantly affect body image perceptions, mere frequency of use does not directly lead to increased dissatisfaction. This suggests that the content type and engagement level with AR are critical factors. The research highlights the dual nature of AR: while it can enhance user experience, it also has the potential to intensify beauty standards, thus affecting self-perception negatively. Future studies are recommended to investigate both the positive and negative effects of AR and to include broader demographic analyses to better understand AR's impact across different cultures and social contexts. This will aid in developing a balanced perspective on AR's role in shaping contemporary beauty ideals and inform responsible innovation in AR technology development.
