Modeling of industrial power distribution circuits for voltage sag and fault analysis

This thesis uses the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) to simulate sensitive electrical loads during voltage sags. The study begins by discussing the modeling procedure for induction motors based on manufacturer datasheets. It then investigates and develops a 24-pulse variable frequency drive (VFD) model in EMTP. The functionality of the VFD model is evaluated by using a test feeder, with a focus on its control mechanisms. The VFD is controlled with the field-oriented control (FOC) method and tuning procedures are thoroughly discussed. Furthermore, a low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) model is designed to replicate the operational behavior of the VFDs being studied. The induction motor model is validated, with steady-state simulation and direct-line starting being documented in this thesis. The study progresses to modeling sensitive loads by incorporating an asynchronous machine (ASM) powered by the enhanced VFD under LVRT conditions. Finally, the grounding scheme is examined within an industrial test feeder to determine its impact on overall sag mitigation during fault conditions.
