Mitigating Displacement of Low-Income Residents: A Practical Ideal Model for Cities

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to develop a practical ideal model for large metropolitan cities to use for mitigating displacement of low-income residents, due to redevelopment. Displacement adversely affects low-income residents by breaking social ties in a neighborhood, and forcing residents to relocate; disadvantaging low-income residents. Method: A survey, based on the findings in the literature review, was sent to city officials to gauge opinions about the model and its methods/concepts. Results: The results of the survey determined which methods best help mitigate the displacement of low-income residents in gentrifying areas in cities. Conclusion: A city can alleviate problems associated with displacement of low-income residents by following a displacement plan specific to its needs as a community.
