Analysis of Texas College Students' Loan Borrowing Patterns
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis study was conducted to examine Texas college students' loan borrowing patterns. Through the use of a questionnaire, a survey was conducted among individuals who financed all or part of their college education through the use of the State Sponsored Student Loan Program. The results of the study showed that the majority of the Texas college student loan borrowers are not having difficulties repaying their State Sponsored Guaranteed Student Loans. The respondents indicated that limited parental assistance, lack of other available funding sources, and increasing tuition costs were the primary reasons that prompted them to secure educational loans. Of the three major ethnic groups that participated in the study, Blacks reported the highest average cumulative debt. Anglo student borrowers who attended public institutions in Texas used 3.3 percent of their income for the purpose of repaying their State Sponsored Student Loans. The data reflected that the great majority of the respondents could not have attended an institution of higher learning without the use of the State Sponsored Guaranteed Student Loans.
