The review of the literature suggests that more money is spent on and more programs and services are provided for professional employees than for nonprofessional employees. The review also indicates that large companies spend more money per employee on training and development than small companies and that few companies assess the basic skills of job applicants or promotion candidates. One hundred and fifty-nine high-tech manufacturing firms listed in the Directory of Austin Area High Technology Firms (1993) were used as the subjects for the survey. The questionnaire was field tested, and when the questionnaires were returned, a t-test of independent proportions was run on the data in order to assess the results. This study found that very few high-tech manufacturing firms (large or small) in the Austin, Texas area spent more than $5,000 total on the training and development of their employees (professional or non-professional) or offered substantial training and development programs in fiscal year 1993.
