Capillary Zone Electrophoresis Analysis of Isocyanates in Spray-Painting Operations

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Various diisocyanate monomers and polyisocyanate oligomers exist in spray painting formulations and are known to be harmful to workers who are exposed to a spray-painting environment. Several methods were used for the sampling and analysis of airborne 1,6- hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) monomer and polyisocyanate during Spray-painting operations. NIOSH Method 5521, OSHA Method 42, NIOSH Method 5522 and Capillary Zone Electrophoresis (CZE) methods were compared. The results obtained from the CZE analysis method and the HPLC analysis methods are comparable. The CZE methods could be used as a complementary tool to HPLC, and offer better resolution, higher separation efficiency, as well as the potential to minimize sample preparation and analysis for as little as 3 uL of sample. The improved resolution should assist in the identification and quantitation of HDI within a complicated spray paint environment. Furthermore, field studies show that polyisocyanate concentrations during spray-painting operations often exceed a concentration of 1 mg/m®%, which is believed to be hazardous.
