An Analysis of Biology I Laboratory Investigations for Essential Elements and Concepts
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis study analyzes the laboratory investigations found in the Biology I textbooks and their associated laboratory manuals for essential element and concept/topic coverage. The textbooks and laboratory manuals evaluated are those currently (1985-1991) under adoption in Texas. The textbooks are Heath Biology (Heath) by McLaren/Rotundo, Modern Biology (Holt) by Otto/Towle, Biology: Living Systems (Merrill) by Oram, Hummer and Smoot, Biology (Macmillan) by Creager, Jantzen and Mariner, and Scott Foresman Biology (Scott Foresman) by Siesnick et al. Each investigation was assigned essential elements and concepts/topics. All information was put into a database, and three reports were produced: 1) a list of laboratory investigations alphabetized by publisher; 2) a list of laboratory investigations in order numerically by essential element; and 3) a list of laboratory investigations in order numerically by concepts/topics. A diskette with all data is included so that teachers may access the information according to their own specifications, provided they have access to an Apple Ile computer and the AppleWorks database. It was found that eight sub elements and four concepts/topics are not well covered by laboratory investigations.
