Temperature-Dependent Supramolecular Remodeling of Poly-Ether Perylene Diimides

Within the past decade, perylene diimides (PDIs) have been regarded as a class of the most investigated organic dyes, particularly studied for their photophysical and supramolecular properties. The high versatility of PDIs enables a wide ranged use in practical applications from organic energy-harvesting systems to self-healing hydrogels. This thesis investigates a novel PDI, TEL-045, which has been found to exhibit unique properties in solution. In doing so, this serves to expand the possible applications by which these molecules can be utilized as current PDI research in various fields readily proceeds. PDIs inherently stack to form self-assemblies in solution which can exist in various morphologies that are critical in accessing highly sought after characteristics such as the high emissivity of J-type assemblies or the enhanced electron mobility of H-type assemblies. TEL-045, a polyether PDI, exhibits an entropy-driven self-assembly and supramolecular remodeling between non-emissive, H-type self-assemblies and emissive, phase-separated aggregates, in a thermally dependent and reversible manner within aqueous solution. The investigation into TEL-045 characterizes and examines the molecular basis of its entropically-driven self-assembly and its ability to switch between aggregation types in this unnatural way. Experimental studies and characterization of TEL-045 alongside analogues has been conducted to evaluate the structure-property relationships present.
