Intelligibility: From Phoneme to Process

This preliminary investigation explores the impact of phonological processes on speech intelligibility. The influence of traditional articulation theory and phonological theory on the assessment of unintelligible speech is reviewed. Traditionally based articulation assessment of speech intelligibility is discussed and the validity of the traditionally based Arizona Articulation Proficiency Scale as a measure of speech intelligibility is explored. Phonologically based analysis procedures of unintelligible speech and cited phonological process factors that affect speech intelligibility are discussed. Using objective and subjective intelligibility measurements, the influence of phonological process factors on speech intelligibility is investigated. These phonological process factors include number, type, and frequency of occurrence.
