However, the emerging field of psychobiotics- probiotics with the potential to improve mental health conditions- offers a novel treatment approach. This systematic review of literature aims to explore whether the use of psychobiotics can improve depression symptoms in adults with major depressive disorder. The nine randomized-controlled trials included in this review all used a variation of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium as their psychobiotics for intervention. Sample sizes ranged from 45 to 156 participants with a total sample size across all studies of 747. Intervention durations ranged from four to eight weeks in length. Findings suggest that psychobiotics may be beneficial as a complementary or adjunct treatment to improve depression symptoms for major depressive disorder or varying levels of depression. Promising data suggest that psychobiotics may prevent the progression of mild to moderate depression to major depressive disorder. However, while psychobiotics appear promising, the evidence remains limited. Further clinical trials are needed to determine their long-term efficacy, minimum colony-forming units needed, and safety compared to established antidepressant therapies.
