Mitigation Strategies for Developed Areas of Galveston Bay
Abstract
dc:description.abstractAlthough wetlands in Texas comprise less than 5 percent of the State's total area, Texas is one of 19 states that has exhibited the most significant loss of wetland ecosystems (Tiner, 1984). Studies conducted in the past decade indicate that much of this loss can be attributed to human impacts from development (Salveson, 1990). Of the human impacts affecting wetlands, dredging and dredge-related activities are perhaps the most significant (Salveson, 1990). This study analyzes and evaluates mitigation strategies for managing wetlands influenced by dredging activities associated with development. Additionally, the study yields a compendium of mitigation strategies, which can be utilized as a mitigation "handbook" for resource managers, policy makers, and developers in Galveston Bay.
