The effect of using nano-ceramics as a filler element in the cyanate ester resin will be evaluated. High temperature materials play a vital role in the entire aerospace industry. These materials are used in aerospace vehicles, rocket nozzles, and ship hulls to protect their internal structure from hot combustion gases and as heat shielding for planetary entry also. Different loading levels (5wt%, 7.5wt% and 10wt%) of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) and boron carbide(B4C) nano-ceramics are dispersed into the cyanate ester resin using three roll mill and ultrasonication process. Hand layup followed by the compression molding is used to fabricate carbon fiber-reinforced cyanate ester nanocomposite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is performed very effectively for microanalysis and failure analysis of the composites. Tension, compression, and short beam strength tests are conducted per ASTM D 638, ASTM D 3410, and ASTM D 2344, respectively. Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) is performed to analyze the mass loss and char yield of different formulations. Aerothermal ablation testing is conducted to evaluate the nanocomposites under a high heat flux of 1,000 W/cm2 by the Oxy-acetylene Test Bed (OTB) as per ASTM E 285. The objective of this research is to determinate if a nanomodification of cyanate ester resin with nano-ceramics will improve the high heat soaking properties of carbon fiber reinforced cyanate ester nanocomposites, without degrading its thermal and mechanical properties. The results are demonstrating the performance of this new material system as a high temperature material.","abstract_html":"In this research work, a PAN-based carbon fabric reinforced nano-ceramics modified cyanate ester composite material is fabricated for the field of high temperature applications.
